SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION These and other objects, which appear from the following description, are achieved by means of a side underrun protection and a motor vehicle, and which further exhibit the features set forth in the characterizing part of appended independent claims 1 and 10. Preferred embodiments of the underrun protection are defined 2- 9.
Specifically, an object of the invention is achieved with a side underrun protection for a vehicle comprising at least one side bumper means arranged longitudinally at a long side of the vehicle, comprising magnetic means for releasably applying said side underrun protection to said vehicle and support means for said bumper means.
This enables easy and quick assembly and disassembly from the vehicle of said side underrun protection so that the vehicle can drive on public roads without violating regulations and endangering safety for other road users.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said magnetic means is applied to the chassis of the vehicle. This further simplifies assembly at and disassembly from the vehicle since the side underrun protection is applied to the vehicle chassis by said magnetic means.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said support means comprise at least one support frame. This provides robust support for the side bumper means. According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said support frame is arranged to run transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said support frame comprises at least two holders arranged on opposite sides of said support frame for retaining said bumper means. In this way, the side bumper means are retained so that the risk of them falling off is reduced.
According to one embodiment, said side underrun protection comprises at least two support frames. This results in a more robust arrangement and improved shock protection.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, each holder comprises fastening means for said bumper means. This further reduces the risk of the side bumper means falling off.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said holder comprises resilient means for resiliently retaining said bumper means. This provides a simple and quick way to manually apply said side bumper means to retain them, and reduces the risk of said bumper means falling off.
According to an embodiment of said side underrun protection, said holder comprises an upwardly open U-shaped configuration. As a result, the side bumper means can be placed in a simple and fast manner in said U-shaped configuration for said side underrun protection.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention will be better understood with reference to the following detailed description read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the many views, and in which: Fig. 1 schematically illustrates a motor vehicle; ; Fig. 2 schematically illustrates a perspective view of a side underrun protection according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figs. 3-5 side underrun protection in Fig. 2; schematically illustrates perspective views of details of Fig. 6a schematically illustrates a perspective view of an embodiment of a holder of said side underrun protection of the present invention, and fi g. 6b-d illustrate side views of various embodiments of a holder according to the present invention; and Fig. 7 schematically illustrates a side view of a part of a side underrun protection according to an embodiment of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 schematically shows a motor vehicle 1 arranged to receive a vehicle side underrun protection according to an embodiment of the present invention. The exemplary vehicle 1 comprises a tractor 2 and a trailer 3. The vehicle 1 may be a heavy vehicle such as a truck.
Fig. 2 schematically illustrates a perspective view of a side underrun protection I for a vehicle 1, for example a tractor, according to an embodiment of the present invention, and Figs. 3-5 schematically illustrate perspective views of parts of the side underrun protection.
The side underrun protection I of a vehicle comprises a first side bumper means 10 longitudinally arranged at a first long side of the vehicle and a second side bumper means 12 arranged at a second long side of the vehicle opposite said first side, each side bumper means 10, 12 being arranged to receive side impact to protect the vehicle from a side impact. Each side bumper means 10, 12 of said side underrun protection is thus intended to run substantially longitudinally in the vehicle when said side underrun protection 1 is applied to the vehicle.
Each side bumper member 10, 12 is substantially made of aluminum.
Said bumper means has an elongated shape and is designed and dimensioned according to legal requirements.
The side underrun protection 1 further comprises a first support frame 20 and a second support frame 22, wherein said support frames 20, 22 are configured to be connected to the vehicle, preferably the vehicle chassis 30 as illustrated in fi g. 2, intermediate relative to said first and second side bumper means 10, 12, for supporting said first and second side bumper means 10, 12.
Each support frame 20, 22 is arranged to run transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The first and second support frames 20, 22 are arranged at a distance from and substantially parallel to each other. Since the first and second support frames 20, 22 are separate units, the distance between the first and second support frames 20, 22 can be adjusted to the length of the chassis 30, and / or the distance between the axles of the vehicle.
The support frame 20, 22 is configured to be supported by the vehicle chassis 30.
According to this embodiment, the support frame is arranged to be supported by a pair of opposite beams 30a, 30b of the vehicle chassis 30 configured to run in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle at a distance from and substantially parallel to each other. Such support frames 20, 22 provide a robust base for supporting the side underrun protection I.
Each support frame projects on each side a distance from the pair of beams 30a, 30b. Each support frame has a first end portion 20a, 22a and a second portion 20b, 22b. At each end portion, a portion of the support frame extends substantially perpendicular to the transverse direction of the vehicle downwards at said distance from and a certain distance along the respective beams 30a, 30b of the vehicle chassis 30.
Each support frame includes a first holder 40 at said first end portion of the support frame and a second holder 42 at said second end portion of the support frame. Each holder 40, 42 comprises an upwardly U-shaped configuration for retaining a bumper member 10, 12. The first bumper member 10 is thus arranged to rest with a portion at the bottom portion of the U-shaped configuration of the first holder 40 of the first support frame 20 and rest with another portion at the bottom portion of the U-shaped configuration of the first holder 40 of the second support frame 22.
According to one embodiment, each support frame 20, 22 is mainly made of aluminum.
According to the embodiment in fi g. 2, two support frames 20, 22 are used. Alternatively, more than two support frames could be used, which would result in better support and more robust side underrun protection. Alternatively, a single support frame could be used, where said individual support frame is designed and dimensioned to meet legal requirements. A single support frame would result in faster assembly and disassembly of the side underrun protection I.
Fig. 5 embodiment of the present invention. The side bumper means schematically comprises a side bumper means 10 according to a first bumper member portion 10a and a second bumper member portion 10b, said first and second bumper member portions 10a, 10b being slidable relative to each other to modify the length of the side bumper member 10.
According to this embodiment, the first bumper member portion 10a is hollow so that the second bumper member portion 10b can be inserted into the first bumper member portion so that the first and second bumper member portions 10a, 10b are slidable relative to each other. Thus, the inner circumferential surface of the first bumper member portion 10a is slightly larger than the outer circumferential surface of the second bumper member portion 10b. Alternatively, the inner circumferential surface of the first bumper member portion 10a is slightly smaller than the outer circumferential surface of the second bumper member portion 10b.
Hereby the side bumper means 10 can be adjusted to the length of the chassis and / or the distance between the axles of the vehicle.
The first bumper member portion has a set of through holes 13 and the second bumper member portion has a set of through holes 14, said through holes 13, 14 being arranged so that said first and second bumper member portions 10a, 10b can be locked at a desired length of the bumper member 10. The connection in said set of through holes 13, 14 is effected by means of a fastening element, for instance a pin, a bolt, a screw or the like in order to effect easy assembly and disassembly.
The side underrun protection 1 further comprises magnetic means 50 for releasably applying said side underrun protection to said vehicle.
Said magnetic means 50 is connected to the first and second support frames and is configured to magnetically connect the first and second support frames to the chassis of the vehicle.
The magnetic means 50 is operable between an activated state in which a magnetic field is provided for applying the first and second support frames 20, 22 to the vehicle chassis 30 and a deactivated state for releasing the first and second support frames 20, 22 from the chassis 30.
According to this embodiment, the magnetic means 50 comprises four magnets 52, 54, 56, 58. Two magnets 52, 54 are spaced apart on the first support frame 20 so that when placed on the chassis 30 each magnet rests on a respective beam 30a. , 30b at the chassis 30.
Furthermore, two magnets 56, 58 are spaced apart on the second support frame 22 so that when placed on the chassis 30, each magnet rests on a respective beam 30a, 30b of the chassis 30.
The magnets are positioned to allow easy mounting and disassembly from said vehicle of said support frames 20, 22. The magnets 52, 54, 56, 58 are positioned so that the first and second support frames 20, 22 can be magnetically connected to said longitudinal beams of the chassis.
The side underrun protection comprises according to an embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and fi g. 7 a support member 60a, 60b, 600, 60d in communication with each magnet 52, 54, 56, 58 at the beam 30a, 30b of the chassis 30 and arranged to run between the beam 30a, 30b and the support frame 20, 22 to provide additional stability to side underrun protection l.
Said magnetic means 50, for example each magnet 52, 54, 56, 58 is according to one embodiment configured to be activated and deactivated by means of a lever 50a of said magnetic means. According to one embodiment, each magnet has a lifting capacity of about 125 kg. The magnetic means can be configured to have any suitable lifting capacity.
According to one embodiment, the magnetic means 50, for example each magnet 52, 54, 56, 58, is connected to the respective support frame 20, 22 by means of a fastening element 62, for example a screw, bolt or the like shown in fi g. 7.
The magnetic means, ie. the magnets, are according to an embodiment of the type used to lift metal parts. The magnetic means 50 does not require any electricity.
Fig. 6a schematically illustrates a perspective view of an embodiment of a holder 70 of the side underrun protection 1 of the present invention.
The holder 70 according to this embodiment comprises fastening means 72 for said bumper means. Said fastening means comprises a resilient member 72a arranged at said downwardly extending portion of the support frame. Said fastening means 72 further comprises a locking member 72b connected to said resilient member 72a. Said locking means 72b is resiliently movable in an outward direction between an extended or open state by means of a handle 72c connected to the locking means 72b and a closed state by means of a spring force. The locking means 72b is arranged so that in said open state a side bumper means 10, 12 can be received in said holder 70, and when said locking means 72b is released to the closed state, said side bumper means 10, 12 are locked or biased in said holder so that the risk of the bumper means falling out of the holder is minimized.
Fig. 6b schematically illustrates a side view of an embodiment of a holder 80 of the side underrun protection I of the present invention. The holder 80 according to this embodiment comprises a holding element 82 resiliently arranged at said downwardly extending portion of the support frame, projecting outwards and with an end portion 82a extending downwards.
The projecting retaining member 82 is arranged at such a level that the side bumper member 10, 12 can be housed between the bottom portion of the U-shaped configuration and the retaining member, said downwardly extending portion of the retaining member being configured to prevent said bumper member from falling out of the retainer.
Thanks to the projecting holding element 82 being resiliently arranged, the downwardly extending portion 82a can be flexed in the direction of the arrow A so that the beam can be inserted without having to slide it into the opening profile formed by the U-shaped configuration and the holding element.
Fig. 6c schematically illustrates a side view of an embodiment of a holder 90 of the side underrun protection I of the present invention. The holder comprises a through hole provided at the downwardly extending portion of the support frame.
The side bumper means 10 comprises a locking means or pin means 92 projecting from one side of said bumper means 10 and arranged to fit in said through hole. Said pin means 92 comprises at its end portion 10 distal from the bumper means wing means 92a arranged to pivot out to lock the side bumper means so as to prevent it from falling out of said holder.
According to one embodiment, the wing means are rotatably arranged about an axis 92b between a first state in which the wing means 92a are recessed and a second state, shown in Fig. 6c, in which the wing means 92a are extended. Thus, the wing members 92a are retractable. In said recessed condition, the pin member 92 can be inserted through said through hole.
Fig. 6d schematically illustrates a side view of an embodiment of said holder 100 of the side underrun protection I of the present invention. the holder 100 according to this embodiment comprises fastening means 102 for said bumper means 10. The fastening means comprises a resilient means 102a in the form of a helical spring arranged in connection with a through hole in the downwardly extending portion of the support frame 20 with a first end facing outwards and a second end turn inwards with respect to the vehicle.
The fastener 102 further comprises a locking member 103 having a first end portion 103a, a second end portion and an elongate portion 103b. Said first end portion of said locking means has an L-shaped configuration. Said second end portion of said locking means has a shaft 103c about which wing means 103d are rotatably arranged between a first state in which the wing means 103d are recessed and a second state, shown in Fig. 6d, in which the wing means 103d are extended and operable in the direction of arrow A . Thus, the wing members 103d are retractable. In said recessed condition, the second end portion of said locking means can be inserted through said through hole. 104 the side of the bumper means of the end portion 20a of the support frame 20, wherein said Fastener further comprises a stop means arranged on stop means 104 is arranged at said opening to prevent said helical spring 102a from leaving said opening, so that the spring is allowed to expand in opposite direction, i.e. in the direction of the wing means 103d when inserted through said through hole.
The fastener further comprises an element 102b to which the other end of the spring is connected so that elements act on the wing means 103d in said extended second state, forcing the locking means 103 in the inward direction so that the L-shaped first end portion 103a acts on the side impact means 10, consequently preventing retention the side bumper means and the side bumper means from falling off.
Fig. 7 schematically illustrates a side view of a part of the side underrun protection 1 with an embodiment of a holder 110 of the side underrun protection. In one embodiment it comprises a fastening means for said bumper means. of the present invention. the holder 110 according to this said fastening means comprises a resilient member 112 arranged at said end portion 20a of the support frame 20. Said fastening element further comprises a locking member 113 connected to said resilient member 112. Said locking member 113c is resiliently movable in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal and transverse direction of the vehicle between an extended or open condition by means of a handle 114 connected to the resilient member 112 and thus the locking member 113 and a closed condition by means of spring force.
The locking means 113 is arranged so that in said open state a side bumper means 10 can be received in said holder 110, and when said locking means is released to the closed state, said bumper means is locked or biased in said holder 110 so that the risk of the bumper means 10 falling out of the holder minimized.

A side underrun protection (1) for a vehicle comprising at least one side bumper means (10, 12) longitudinally arranged at a long side of the vehicle, characterized by magnetic means (50) for releasably applying said underrun protection (I) to said vehicle, support elements (60a) 60d) to provide stability and support means (20, 22) for said bumper means (10, 12).
